In 1665 the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards was formed. As a result of their heroic actions fighting off the French Grenadiers at Waterloo in 1815, they were renamed by Royal Proclamation as the “1st or Grenadier Regiment of Foot Guards”, thus becoming the only regiment in the British Army to be named for one of its battle honours.
Built circa 1720 as the home to the Foot Guards Regiment and famously known as the Duke of Wellington’s Officers Mess. Originally named The Guardsman as a licensed premises in 1818, it was frequented by King George IV.
The Grenadier enjoys a fine reputation for good food and beer.
